DEEPER INTO SCRIPTURE

HEARING THE VOICE OF THE SAVIOUR

ST ANDREW CATECHETICAL DIPLOMA

Put out a little from the land … Put out into the deep … Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.
Jesus
[Lk 4:2-11]

It is Christ Himself who speaks when the Holy Scriptures are read in the Church.

Vatican II: Sacrosanctum Concilium 7

START TUESDAY 24th September 2024

  • Having considered the articles of the faith and common objections to the faith during the certificate year, we are ready to put out into the deep, (Lk 5:2).

  • St Jerome, Father of the Church, teaches us that Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.  Jesus is inviting us to deepen our friendship with Him by learning how to hear His voice in the Scriptures, and especially in the Gospels.

  • As Catholics, we hear a lot of Scripture at Holy Mass in the course of the liturgical year. But very often, our understanding of Scripture is fragmented, and we do not know how those Scripture passages fit into the overarching story of the Bible.  And we may not know how we ourselves fit into that story.  In fact, we have heard the stories so many times that we often fail to listen afresh to the Word of God.

  • The Second Vatican Council teaches us that “among all the Scriptures, even those of the New Testament, the Gospels have a special preeminence … for they are the principal witness for the life and teaching of the incarnate Word, our Saviour,”   (Dei Verbum 18). Yet as we go to Holy Mass day after day, week after week, year after year, and we hear the same Gospel stories again and again, very often, we might feel that we already know that story. In this second year, we learn how to read the Sacred Page – how to go beyond a superficial reading and how to begin to penetrate deeply the Word of God.  We will examine Catholic Principles for Scriptural Interpretation, we will see the overarching story of the Bible, and then we will focus on the Gospels and the words of Christ Jesus, who says, “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete,”  (Jn 15:11) .

  • This course is designed to help us to hear Jesus speaking directly to us, to enter more deeply into friendship with Him, and to help others to encounter Christ in Sacred Scripture and to grow in discipleship.

  • The programme is designed to help catechists, parents, parish workers, and anyone interested in discovering the riches of the teaching of Christ and moving beyond superficial acquaintanceship into deep friendship with God Incarnate.  We will look at specific Gospel texts and treat concrete examples to see that “all Divine Scripture speaks of Christ, and all Divine Scripture is fulfilled in Christ,” (CCC 134).

Once you have registered and made your payment you will receive an email on the evening before each lecture/discussion session, with the link for the next day’s session. On the first day of a course, there will be an optional test meeting 15 minutes before the start of the session – for anyone who wishes to practice clicking the link and making sure they can see and hear without any problems. At the time of the session, to “enter the meeting room”, you simply click the link in your email, follow the directions, and you are in! There is no need for any advanced computer or technical skill. Real-time Interactive Participation Once you are in the “meeting room”, you can see and hear everything. We prefer everyone’s web-cam to be turned on, so that we’re all visible to each other, but you can opt to turn off your web-cam if necessary. You can ask questions, contribute to the discussion, and participate just as you would if you were onsite – all from the comfort of your own home. Following each session, notes will be emailed to you. 24-hour email, and access to your tutor by phone or Zoom by appointment. In Case You Miss a Lecture on one of our long courses As with any discipline, a certain time commitment is necessary in order to learn effectively. Nevertheless, we understand that there will be times when you might be unable to attend a lecture. When this happens, you can contact your course lecturer as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made for you to learn the material covered in the lecture you missed.
