The Sacraments of Initiation & the Bible

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed,
“If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me… Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water.”

Now this he said about the Spirit,
which those who believed in him were to receive.

Jn 7:37-39

The whole liturgical life of the Church revolves around the Eucharistic sacrifice and the sacraments.

The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales have stated very clearly that Scripture is at the centre of everything the Church does. The Word of God shapes our prayer and worship.

  • This course seeks to explore the Biblical roots of the Sacraments of Initiation.

  • In the Sacraments, we truly encounter Christ.

  • Through the Sacraments, we receive sanctifying grace, a participation in the Divine life, (2Pet 1:4).

  • Through the Sacraments, Jesus touches us, heals us, and gives us power.

  • In this course, we will learn about how the Sacraments work; and we will examine the Scriptural foundations for each of the three Sacraments of Initiation – Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist.  We will see how the Dogmas of the Church are rooted and grounded in the Scriptural revelation concerning these Sacraments. And we will consider the specific effects of each of these Sacraments in the life of the Christian disciple.

  • This course is designed for parents, teachers, catechists, and anyone who wants to participate in the work of the New Evangelization – anyone who wants to live their discipleship more authentically and anyone who wants to invite others to the joy of following Christ.

  • This course is particularly helpful for anyone wishing to prepare to work as a catechist, an instructor for RCIA or Confirmation preparation, or any teacher of the faith.

  • The Lux in Tenebris team invites you to a deeper consideration of the grace of the Sacraments and the richness of God’s Word as it is lived, shared, and celebrated.

Once you have registered and made your payment you will receive an email on the evening before each lecture/discussion session, with the link for the next day’s session. On the first day of a course, there will be an optional test meeting 10 minutes before the start of the session – for anyone who wishes to practice clicking the link and making sure they can see and hear without any problems. At the time of the session, to “enter the meeting room”, you simply click the link in your email, follow the directions, and you are in! There is no need for any advanced computer or technical skill. Real-time Interactive Participation Once you are in the “meeting room”, you can see and hear everything. To ask questions, or participate in the discussion, you simply un-mute your microphone (or you can opt to just listen). We prefer everyone’s web-cam to be turned on, so that we’re all visible to each other, but you can opt to turn off your web-cam if necessary. You can ask questions, contribute to the discussion, and participate just as you would if you were onsite – all from the comfort of your own home. 24-hour email, and access to your tutor by phone or Zoom by appointment. In Case You Miss a Lecture on one of our long courses As with any discipline, a certain time commitment is necessary in order to learn effectively. Nevertheless, we understand that there may be a time when you might be unable to attend a lecture. When this happens, you can contact your course lecturer as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made for you to learn the material covered in the lecture you missed. You will be provided with the resources necessary, so that you do not have major gaps in your learning.
